Introduction to the Water, Peace, and Security Nexus in the Sahel: Challenges and Perspectives

Challenges and Perspectives

The Sahel region, stretching across Africa just south of the Sahara Desert, is facing a critical intersection of challenges related to water scarcity, peace, and security. Characterized by an arid and semi-arid climate, the region experiences chronic water shortages exacerbated by climate change, resulting in erratic rainfall patterns, prolonged droughts, and desertification. These environmental stressors have severe implications for agriculture, livelihoods, and overall economic stability.

Water scarcity in the Sahel often fuels competition over limited resources, leading to conflicts among communities, ethnic groups, and even nations. This competition exacerbates the already existing political instability and the presence of armed groups and insurgencies in the region. The scarcity of reliable water sources also hampers socioeconomic development, affecting health, education, and economic activities, and perpetuating a cycle of poverty and underdevelopment.

To address these multifaceted challenges, integrated and collaborative approaches are essential. Promoting Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) can help in the sustainable management and equitable distribution of water resources. Peacebuilding initiatives, including dialogue platforms and inclusive governance structures, are crucial for addressing water-related conflicts. Climate adaptation and mitigation strategies, international cooperation, and capacity building through education and training are key components in building resilient and self-sufficient communities.

This webinar will provide an in-depth exploration of these issues and discuss potential pathways for sustainable solutions that promote stability and development in the Sahel.
